For almost 20 years, I've wanted to draw a webcomic about the bars I go to, the owners, regulars and the staff I've known.
Years ago, on 7th Street when The Shamrock Pub became the Abbey Pub. I planned to draw a comic called "The Shabby" Shamrock-Abbey, hehe.. a bartender at the time, Francis Diaz. I called her "Frankie D". would ask me "hows the comic coming along?" I would reply "still working on it". Years passed, I moved on to other Bars, closer to home and she took other jobs. Every year she had a toy drive at Christmas. I would get the email "Shawn can you help me design the flyer this year?" I would, I'd even get them printed. Anything for the kids and Frankie D. Last year I didn't get an email. Sadly, Francis had passed away. I knew she had some health issues but.. what? so sudden, so young, It came as a complete shock!
An overweight, near alcoholic, smoker, vaper, like me could still be around, and someone so cheerful, young and pretty be gone. makes absolutely no sense to me.
Recently, My favorite bar closed, so this website wasn't needed anymore. I feel it's time to finally give this comic some attention. Tell stories about funny and interesting people I've known and actually follow through on something. If for no other reason, than for Frankie D.
Nobody is promised tomorrow, so get started today.
I'm sorry it took so long Francis. 💐
